Colin is a therapist and biblical theology/languages nerd from South Jersey. While in college, he gained a passion for helping people learn the Bible beyond the basics of what they'd hear in an average Sunday morning sermon. He calls it "reading the Bible uncut and unfiltered." That means presenting the scriptures in a manner as close to their original form as possible, without diluting or omitting any challenging or controversial aspects.
He thinks reading theology, translating Bible passages, watching 80s horror movies, and collecting Star Wars figures count as fun hobbies. What a nerd!
I remember when my parents gave me my first pocket knife. It was part of a multitool and barely sharp enough to be a butter knife, but my father (per my mother's insistence) made sure to lecture me about how I should and shouldn't use it. He was very clear that if I used the knife carelessly or to cause harm, it would be taken away. While I definitely didn't appreciate his instruction at the time, no one can fault my parents for refusing to place a potential weapon in the hands of a pre-teen and let him do whatever he pleased with it.
In Hebrews 4:12, the word of God described as "sharper than any double-edged sword." To carry the analogy, that means the scriptural texts can either be a tool or a weapon depending on how they are used and by whom. Far too too many stories can be told of Christians who have waved the blade of the Bible around indiscriminately. Like a child playing with a machete, they inflict pain on themselves and anyone within their reach, irrespective of their original intentions.
The Bible Uncut and Unfiltered exists to counter that culture. We aim to provide a healing place for those who have been the victims of misapplied Bible texts. Here, we like to discuss the questions you can’t ask and the context you won’t learn in church.
Now, let me share a secret with you — the Bible isn't a children's book. Sometimes it's downright hard to read and even harder to understand. But that's not what you'll hear in most churches. The average Sunday sermon presents a watered-down, cleaned-up text without mention of any difficulties, paradoxes, or unusual details. For some people, that's all well and good, but if you're here, I'm guessing that kind of message doesn't resonate with you. Perhaps you walk away from church more discouraged than when you walked in, like a weight has been added to your shoulders rather than taken away. You're left with some tough questions and weird passages that no one seems to want to take seriously.
At The Bible Uncut and Unfiltered, we believe it's far better to engage with the hard questions than to settle for easy answers. We embrace the challenges, uncertainties, and complexities found within the scriptures. If what you're reading here resonates with you, we wholeheartedly welcome you to join us on this transformative journey.
Together, we'll explore the Bible's untold stories, examine its paradoxes, and uncover its relevance in our lives today. Our aim is to foster a community where intellectual curiosity and respectful dialogue are not only accepted but celebrated. So, grab a seat, open your mind, and prepare to embark on this adventure with us.
